Week 1 - Response to Articles

Each of the readings focused on different aspects of reading. The article, “The Greatest Art for the littlest readers” focused on introducing children reading through the use of imagery. The reading about the "Wikipedia entry on literacy" presented literacy twofold: 1) as being necessary to participate in society and 2) the components needed to become literate. The reading about the “silencing teachers in an era of scripted reading served as a reminder of the everyday struggle the teacher is confronted with: to stay or stray from the curriculum.
I have children in my class that can not read. Is it possible for them to learn to read through imagery? Do I need to stray from the curriculum to help them improve there reading? Is it possible for them to be contributing members of our society if they are illiterate? During the duration of this course, I hope to have some insight to aforementioned questions.

Introduction

Hello everybody! My name is Dwayne Mc Neil. I have just completed my first year of teaching at Vailsburg Middle School. I am currently enrolled in the MAT program. I was thinking about sharing my favorite color but I don't have one! Lol! Currently, I am at a loss for words. However, I anticipate sharing many of my thoughts throughout the duration of this course.
